Lending a hand to the Parks and Recreation Department: Groundwork Milwaukee sponsored an AmeriCorps*NCCC team that worked with the Milwaukee County Department of Parks and Recreation to make improvements to the County system of parks including planting trees and shrubs to provide a privacy screen between a new section of the Oak Leaf Trail and neighboring private homeowners, planting more than 4,000 native wildflowers on a step riverbank at Eastabrook park along the Milwaukee River to minimize erosion, beautifying two playgrounds at Lake Park, constructing and installing a boat ramp near Riverside Park, installing erosion control along the Ravine Trail at Lake Park, and removing invasive species at several Milwaukee County Parks including Gordon Park. The teams also planted thousands of trees as a part of the County’s effort to restore an Oak Savannah, improving air quality and adding to the county’s tree canopy. These trees will surely be enjoyed for generations to come and aid in the revitalization of native species in the county.
