Groundwork Milwaukee and Milwaukee Community Service Corps teamed up to install a green roof on Milwaukee Community Service Corps' building at Fond du Lac and Center. Green Roofs are roof-top gardens that reduce storm water runoff that would otherwise flow into gutters and downspouts, while also helping to conserve energy by insulating the building, extending the life of the roof and reducing sound. For those who love gardening, it can also be a spot for a small garden in an urban area.

The top of the four-story, Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District headquarters in Milwaukee seems an unlikely spot for a garden of grasses and flowering plants. Although the vegetation - which spans over a third of the building's 11,000 square-foot roof - is pleasing to the eye, the main idea behind the garden installation isn't all about aesthetics.
